PhD student Institute of Zoology University of Zurich Switzerland Expertise: Signal transduction in Caenorhabditis elegans Research Description: The egg-laying system of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is a very important model system. Many basic signal transduction pathways that are conserved amongst the animal kingdom can be studied. Deregulation of these pathways in humans very often leads to diseases like cancer or Alzheimer’s. In C. elegans one function of the LIN-12/Notch pathway is to prevent specific vulval cells from adopting a primary (1°) cell fate and to promote the secondary (2°) fate. So far there are components known that enhance the inhibitory function. However, no component had been found that promotes the 2° fate. In our lab ttr-11 was identified as a putative Notch signaling target gene in a reverse genetic RNAi screen. My work concerns the examination of its expression and interactions with other LIN-12/Notch pathway components to deduce its function in the pathway. Our research contributes to a better understanding of the regulation of the LIN-12/Notch pathway in particular and helps generally to learn more about how cells cross talk. |
